Chapter Forty-Three

Carrie had received a mysterious text message from Sarah as the sun set. It had basically said that she was going away and didn’t know when she’d be back, not a lot else. After her conversation with Frances from the Estates’ mapping department, Carrie was worried. She’d immediately called back, but Sarah’s phone had been turned off.

She knew that Sarah had been tracking down information about the private ambulance from a few days before and had potentially tracked it to a building in Surrey. That fact filled her with dread.

After being unable to contact Sarah, she’d decided to follow her steps and see if she could find the building herself.

It didn’t take much time driving through the small village of Downhaven to find what she was looking for. High brick walls surrounded a grand-looking building. Her design eye had to appreciate the grandeur of the architecture. She wondered if Sarah was inside. Worst-case scenarios were rushing through her mind.

She knew it wouldn’t be wise to saunter up the driveway and ring the bell, if they had a bell. She needed to find more information and see exactly what she was dealing with. She continued driving a little way up the road until she saw a local pub.

She pulled into the car park, found a space, and turned off the engine. She opened her handbag which lay on the front passenger seat and rummaged around for her lipstick and concealer. She flipped down the mirror on her sun visor and did her make-up, ensuring her lips were a dark, rich red to complement her hair. Once she was satisfied, she stepped out of her sporty Mazda and walked towards the pub.

As she walked through the door she knew she had made a good choice for information gathering. The pub was old and so were the locals. A few older men sat at the bar with pints of beer in varying stages of consumption. Conversation dipped into a quiet hum. She felt a number of eyes on her as she made her way to an empty stool at the bar.

Looking over at the other side of the L-shaped bar, she nodded at the men who were unashamedly watching her.

She smiled brightly. “Hello, boys!”

They all smiled and murmured a greeting back.

The bartender came over. He was in his late sixties and had a kind smile. She assumed he was the owner of the pub.

“What can I get you?” he asked.

“I’ll have a half a pint of lager, please,” she said.

Someone shouted, “Where have you been all my life?” much to the amusement of the other patrons who all started laughing.

Carrie threw her head back and laughed. “I’ve been waiting for you, but you never showed up,” she joked.

The men laughed louder. She took a sip of her lager.

“To be honest, boys, I’m actually sniffing around for some information. Can anyone oblige?”

The bartender leaned forward on his elbows. “I’m sure we can help.”

“I’m Charlotte.” She offered her hand.
